Voluntary Hospital Transport Scheme
This Scheme has been in operation since 1985, which was before the Borders General Hospital was built.
Hospital appointments at that time were mostly at Peel Hospital, situated on the far side of Peebles
and difficult to reach without a car.
Initially there were thirty volunteer drivers, some of whom undertook journeys
to the Royal Infirmary or Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.
Nowadays consultants come to the BGH, so fewer journeys to Edinburgh are required.
The Scheme is open to all who live within the Charge.
Volunteer drivers provide transport to hospitals, dentists and opticians etc,
for people who would otherwise have difficulty in keeping their appointments.
A nominal charge is made for each journey and drivers’ fuel costs are reimbursed.
