Café Church and Blythswood Care
Worship on Sunday 29th September 2019 was a United Café Church in the Newtown Community Wing. This was a friendly informal service with a real café atmosphere. We enjoyed singing some lively hymns accompanied by Derek on the keyboard. Was it me or was the singing much better because we were looking up at the screen and projecting our voices rather than singing into our hymn books?
We were treated to an interesting talk by James Campbell who is the Chief Executive of Blythswood Care. He told us, with the help of slides and video, how the charity with your help brings a little happiness to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We learned how the Shoe Box Appeal, enabled Blythswood to distribute 107,073 shoeboxes in 2018. Over a million boxes have been donated since the initiative was started – so keep up the good work.
James told us about Talita Kum in Romania. This project provides a six-hour programme with meals, homework help, play and exercise and Bible Story, five days a week for 40 children from some of the poorest households in Jimbolia, Romania.
As well as enjoying chat, coffee and cake we looked at the morning papers and extracted some important issues (with the help of scissors and glue stick) which we summarised in prayer.
Café Church is different – why not come along next time!
SHOE BOX APPEAL
Members of our Churches and the community support this annual appeal and generously donate filled shoe boxes. In 2018 the charity will celebrate the 25th year of the shoebox appeal. Sadly, the need for filled shoeboxes is as great this year as it was 25 years ago.
Leaflets for the Shoe Box Appeal will appear soon in all four churches. If you have not taken part before, please give it a try. Filling the shoeboxes is good fun and they mean a great deal to the needy people in different parts of the world who receive them. To be delivered in time for Christmas, filled boxes should be handed in to churches on or before Sunday 28th October. If you have empty shoeboxes that you do not need, please recycle them by handing them in to any of the churches.
